Man who owes more than $1 million in child support pleads guilty

As most residents in and around McKinney can appreciate, child support payments can make or break a single parent's budget. The purpose of child support payments it to provide for the day-to-day needs of a child or children. So readers can understand the relief a parent may feel when a parent, who has been avoiding payments, is finally brought to justice.

For one New York man who avoided paying child support for his three children since at least 2002, that is now the case. The man was once known as the most wanted 'deadbeat parent' because he reportedly owes more than $1.2 million in child support payments for his children from two past marriages.

According to a news report, the man fled to Florida and then moved to Thailand, where he did various odd jobs. The man's attorney says he contacted authorities last year because he was tired of living on the run. He eventually traveled to the Philippines, where he was deported. He has been held in jail without bail since December.

The 50-year-old man pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to pay child support. The man, who will be sentenced in May, faces up to four years in prison. The man's lawyer claims he contacted the man's ex-wives, who said they hope the 50-year-old will go free so he can earn a living to pay back his debt.

Although this is definitely an extreme case of child support arrears, it brings to light the lengths that some parents will go in order to avoid paying. Although this man decided to stop running, the prosecutor in this case said "neither court orders nor the familial bond meant anything to him as he fled to avoid his obligations."
