Anthony and Lopez finalize divorce

Texas residents that enjoy the music of Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez might have heard that their divorce was finalized in a California family law court on June 19, 2014 after three years of marriage. The judge awarded joint legal custody to both parents regarding their six-year-old twins. The entertainers came to an amicable agreement regarding visitation and agreed that no child support or spousal support was necessary.

Anthony and another ex-wife are also involved in a separate family court case, where a proposed ruling will require Anthony to increase his child support payments to nearly $27,000 per month if finalized. Anthony would also be required to pay $12,000 a year for his ex-wife and sons' vacation expenses, tuition expenses and vacation costs in this high asset divorce. This order will become official sometime in early July unless Anthony's attorneys propose new and valid legal issues.

Those are going through a divorce would be wise to pay attention to the facts of this case. First, it is important to recognize that courts typically show great deference to couples that enter into custody and support agreements without court supervision. In contrast, Anthony had his child support raised in the case with his ex-wife when an amicable agreement between the couples could apparently not be reached.

From this, it is clear that when parties disagree about divorce terms it would be wise for each of them to retain separate family law attorneys in an attempt to agree on spousal or child support terms. When agreements are not amicably reached outside of court, the parties are dependent on a judge's ruling.
