Preparing for your day in divorce court

The days leading up to your day in divorce court might very well be some of the most stressful of your life. You will find yourself preparing over and over again, making sure that you have your paperwork correct and that you are mentally ready to face your soon-to-be ex-spouse. You might be nervous to see that person again, especially if there was abuse involved while you were in the relationship. Though this might be one of the scariest days of your life, it is important to remind yourself that you will get through it.

Keep a good relationship with your attorney and keep the line of communication open as well as freely flowing. Before you go to your big day in court, if any details pop up in your memory that are important, immediately write them down so that you can disclose that information to your attorney. Disclose any facts that might be relevant to your divorce, even if they are embarrassing or bring up negative feelings.

Mentally prepare yourself to be respectful to all who are present when you attend your court hearing. Avoid behavior that includes rolling your eyes, speaking out of line or showing excessive emotion. Keep a mature and level head about being in the presence of your ex-spouse. You are there strictly for business purposes.

Take time for yourself both before and after the court date so that you can relax. The stress of court can be overwhelming. If you have additional questions about divorce in Texas, speaking to an experienced attorney could be beneficial.
