Enforcement of child support obligations

Divorce rates in the United States are significantly high. This leads to many single parents who find it difficult to financially support their child. The children deserve the best care that the parents can manage, and the United States family laws make sure that they do.

Child support is the periodic payment made by one of the parents for the financial support of their child. In most cases, child support payments are covered by the non-custodial parent. The major chunk of child support includes educational and medical expenses, as well as everyday expenditures. Another important fact about child support is that it does not depend on gender, and can also be paid by a mother to the father of a child, contrary to popular belief.

Failure to pay child support could lead to serious repercussions for the individual in question, including revoked visitation rights, and in serious cases, even imprisonment.

Child support laws are developed individually by each state in the United States. These laws also serve as guidelines to determine the amount of child support required. Furthermore, a separate unit, under the Department of Health and Human Services, known as the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE), also administers national child support programs.

These programs ensure collection of child support payments through various means. Some of the collection methods include withholding income or of unemployment benefits, liens against property, withholding or suspending driver's licenses and seizing assets of debtor parents.

Parents who feel their financial situation does not allow them to take good care of their child, can always ask their former spouse for help, and file for child support. An attorney that specializes in family law can make the entire process much easier and ensure the other parent fulfills his/her child support obligations on a continuing basis.
