From sadness to joy: An adoption story

Families in Texas who suffer the loss of a child often feel as though they may never be happy again. However, it is possible to find a reason to smile once more, even after such an unspeakable tragedy. One out of state family turned their tears of anguish to love as they recently adopted a baby girl, three and a half years after their 23-month-old son lost his life.

The couple says they will never forget their young son and never stop missing him, but they eventually realized that they wanted more children. They tried several fertility treatments that were unsuccessful, and made the choice to pursue adoption. They became foster parents and expected they would have a long road to finally having their own children.

One night, a family friend reached out and asked if they would adopt their young daughter's baby. Though they initially said they would think it over, they quickly decided that they wanted to adopt the little girl. The young, biological mother specifically requested that the couple be allowed to adopt her.

The couple honored their son by creating a nonprofit that provides free cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid classes to their community. They made the difficult but selfless choice to donate his organs and the husband intends to become a living donor, as he has signed up to donate his kidney. They miss their son but are delighted to have a new baby.

Their adoption has not been finalized legally, even though they are now taking care of the baby girl. Those here in Texas who are considering adoption can learn a great deal from this couple's experience. The termination of the parental rights of biological parents is a crucial part of the adoption process. It is best overseen by an attorney who has experience in this area of the law. The process can be complicated, but all of the effort is worthwhile in creating a loving family.
